How to Treat Equine Scratches: Micro-Tek Shampoo & Coat Defense Review

If you’ve ever dealt with equine scratches (pastern dermatitis) or urine scald, you know how frustrating and persistent those little scabs can be. Whether it’s from standing in tall grass or the humid aftermath of a hurricane, these skin issues require a specific touch.

In my latest review, I’m breaking down the two-step powerhouse combo I use to clear up these issues for my horse, Vino, in as little as 24 to 48 hours: EQyss Micro-Tek Shampoo and Coat Defense Trouble Spot Drying Paste.

Step 1: Cleanse with Micro-Tek Medicated Shampoo

When treating scratches, the goal is to kill the bacteria without attracting more dirt. While many riders swear by oil-based products like MTG, they can be a magnet for dust and grime—especially if your horse loves to roll like Vino does.

Why I like Micro-Tek to Treat Equine Scratches:

  • Targeted Treatment: It’s specifically formulated for horses with skin problems.

  • A Little Goes a Long Way: This is an expensive shampoo (around $25 a bottle), so I only use a tiny dab on my hands and work it into a lather directly on the wet leg.

  • PH Balanced: It’s designed specifically for equine skin, which is crucial for healing.

The Process: Hose the legs down, rub a small amount of Micro-Tek into the scabby areas, and let it sit for a couple of minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Step 2: The Drying Phase (Don't Skip This!)

Bacteria thrive in moisture. After rinsing, I use old, plush bath towels to absorb as much water as possible. Then, I let "Dr. Sun" do the rest of the work by hand-grazing Vino until his legs are completely bone-dry.

Step 3: Protect with Coat Defense Drying Paste

Once the skin is dry, I apply Coat Defense Drying Paste. I first discovered their powder in a Cavali Club subscription box and was so impressed I went to the tack shop and bought a full size of the paste.

Why it works:

  • Drawing Salve: It acts as a drying agent that draws out the infection and allows the skin to heal.

  • Overnight Success: I’ve seen results literally overnight. Usually, the scratches are gone within 48 hours.

  • Stays Put: You can leave it on overnight to continue the treatment.

Pro Tip: This paste is about $40, but again, you only need a thin layer over the "dots" of the scratches or urine scald. If you have sensitive skin like mine, definitely wear gloves when applying!

The Verdict

While $65 for a shampoo and paste combo might seem steep, these aren't general grooming products. I save them strictly to treat equine scratches and skin conditions, meaning the bottles last a long time. For a solution that clears up painful scabs in two days without the oily mess, it’s worth every penny.
