In the equestrian world, certain milestones mark your progress in the sport. For some, it’s the first blue ribbon; for others, it’s the first pair of custom tall boots. But for many of us, owning a custom tack trunk is the ultimate "rite of passage."

After years of using second-hand trunks or those bearing other people's initials, I finally decided to invest in a piece of equipment that was truly mine. I recently took delivery of a Custom Phoenix West Medium Sized Vinyl Tack Trunk, and it has quickly become the cornerstone of my equipment setup.

The Essential Competitor’s Equipment

For those who compete, a custom trunk is far more than a decorative box; it is an essential piece of equipment. It serves as the primary vessel for the barn to transport your entire program to the show. From blankets and bandages to specialized gear, having a standardized, durable trunk ensures that everything arrives safely and remains organized in the stable manager's setup.

Ordering and Seasonality: Timing is Everything

I placed my order through Atlanta Saddlery in mid-December. If you are looking to order your own, it is important to keep the "horse show calendar" in mind. Placing an order during the height of the winter circuit (December and January) means you are hitting the busiest season for manufacturers.

Between people changing training programs, leases renewing, and everyone gearing up for the new season, fulfillment times will naturally be longer. My trunk took approximately 8 weeks to arrive. While the wait requires patience, the result is well worth the anticipation.

Design and Personalization of Your Phoenix West Tack Trunk

I ordered the trunk in my barn colors and I made a specific choice regarding the lettering. Unlike my scrim where I used the barn name, I opted for my last name on the trunk. There are all kinds of options for the lid design, fonts, and colors. Wood trim can be stained or painted.

As an adult amateur, I don’t have to worry about "aging out" of a program or heading off to university. I plan to be in this program for a long time, and I wanted the trunk to reflect my personal identity. However, if circumstances ever change, one of the best features of the Phoenix West vinyl trunks is that the front panels are replaceable. You can simply order a new panel rather than replacing the entire unit.

Key Features & Unboxing

When the trunk arrives, it is packed securely in a large box. Pro tip: have a hand cart or a helper nearby, as these are substantial pieces of equipment!

  • The Grooming Tray & Tote: The trunk comes with a removable sliding tray and a grooming box that fits perfectly inside.

  • The Build Quality: The chrome hardware is incredibly sharp and polished—though as every horse owner knows, it will never be this clean again.

  • The Cover (The "Must-Have" Accessory): Because a custom trunk is a significant investment, a cover is essential. I highly recommend the version with a zippered top. My previous second-hand trunk had a cover without a zipper, and it was a constant struggle to access my gear. The zipper allows you to flip the top open while the rest of the trunk remains protected from barn dust and scratches.

Final Thoughts

The Phoenix West Medium trunk is the perfect size for most riders—it provides ample storage for daily essentials without taking up an excessive footprint in the tack room or on the trailer.

If you’re ready to move on from plastic bins or mismatched gear, this is the investment to make. It brings a level of professionalism and organization to your stall that truly makes you feel like you've arrived.
